June is Pride Month, and we are here to celebrate the YA way! There are so many YA books featuring LGBTQ+ characters and stories. Here’s why we love (and need) these stories! And while we’re at it, we added a list of some of our faves.
Empowering Diversity in YA
The YA community is incredibly diverse. We have amazing readers and writers from all types of backgrounds. By sharing LGBTQ+ stories that have varied perspectives, we give a voice to those who haven’t had a chance to be heard. The LGBTQ+ community includes all shades, shapes, and sizes, and books have the power to bring that to light.
Building Acceptance
Hearing and telling stories about, including, and through the lens of LGBTQ+ characters not only gives readers of a variety of perspectives, but also builds tolerance and acceptance. The more we read about all kinds of people, the more we can relate.
Stories Change the World
YA will change the world. We really believe that. That’s why we need more books that celebrate Pride. Storytelling gives us the power to change things in real life by imagining a better world. We have come a long, long way, but there’s still a long way to go. The power lies within our pens and pages!
