What was the first romance novel you read?
I enjoyed a long and storied Meg Cabot phase when I was in high school, and I think her books were my first exposure to romance in the book world. Avalon High was a particular favorite!
What romance are you currently reading?
I just finished Marisa Kanter’s upcoming Friends with Benefits, and I can’t wait to read it again when it comes out!
What are your favorite tropes?
I’m always down for a good enemies-to-lovers journey! Seeing two characters overcome the tension between them to redefine their relationship always hits.
What inspires your writing?
When it comes to writing YA, I’m so inspired by the conflicts that come with growing up. There are so many questions and conflicts to grapple with as part of the coming-of-age process, figuring out who you are and where you belong in the world, and I think teens and tweens deserve so much of our respect and admiration.
What’s your favorite part of writing romance?
As a reader I’m drawn to character-driven stories, so I especially love how much romance relies on strong characters. When it comes to writing my own, I love thinking about how the protagonist and love interest need to grow in order to come together, the inner obstacles that might be standing in their path, and the ways they can help each other grow to forge a relationship together.
Share with us an out of context quote from I Love You S’more!
“So much time separates us now. For the first time since I saw her at orientation, I want to know how she’s filled it. But if I ask her, she might ask me in return, and then I’d have to tell her about Ally. In this place, with the rush of the water and the susurrating wind in the leaves, I don’t want to invoke my heartbreak. I want to let my heartbeat join the peaceful stillness of the birdsong, and rest here with Rynn in the softness of the moment.”
