What was the first romance novel you read?
The first romance I remember reading that truly rocked my world was The Circle Trilogy by Nora Roberts. It had magic and high stakes and all the swoony romance I could ask for. I was basically hooked for life after that.
What romance are you currently reading?
I just finished Midnights with You by Clare Osongco and I Wish You Would by Eva Des Lauriers. They are both contemporary YA novels full of angst and high emotional stakes. I literally couldn’t put either one down.
What are your favorite tropes?
I love forced proximity, fake dating, one bed/horse, enemies to lovers, best friends to lovers, academic rivals. This list could probably go on for miles. Basically, I just love all romance tropes.
Who’s your book crush?
Whit Hayes from What the River Knows by Isabel Ibañez. He’s snarky but sweet at his core. He’s basically my favorite sort of MMC (male main character).
What inspires your writing?
My inspiration comes from a deep desire to see Latine characters fall in love, or save the world, or become better people, or simply exist on the page. I started my writing journey after my daughter came home one day saying she wanted to be like Katniss from The Hunger Games. Her love of reading made me realize there weren’t too many YA fantasy books with Latina leads. I wanted to give her that. I’m also inspired by other books, shows, or movies that make me feel something. Any time my heart squeezes during an emotional scene I watch or when something I read makes me giggle, I immediately want to try to write something that will have that effect on readers.
What’s your favorite part of writing romance?
The readers. It’s so fun to fall in love with the characters we write. But when readers fall for them too, it’s the absolute best.

“He didn’t think the greatest artist could paint a face as beautiful as hers. Even that little line between her brows was a work of wonder. Too bad her personality was that of a badger.”
“Vampires, ancient evil, and forbidden romance? Montoya brings it all!”—Tracy Wolff, #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Crave series
A fledgling vampire and a headstrong vampire huntress must work together—against their better judgment—to rid the world of monsters in this irresistible romantasy.
Carolina Fuentes wants to join her family in hunting the bloodthirsty vampiros that plague her pueblo. Her father, however, wishes to marry her off to a husband of his choosing, someone who’ll take her away from danger.
Determined to prove she’d make a better slayer than wife, Carolina vows to take down a monster herself. But when she runs into un vampiro who is somehow extremely attractive and kind, her plan crumbles.
Lalo Villalobos was content leading a perfectly dull life until un vampiro turned him. Now forced to flee his city, he heads to the pueblo where he believes the first vampiro was made. Surely its residents must know how to reverse this dreadful curse. Instead of finding salvation, Lalo collides with a beautiful young woman who’d gladly drive a dagger through his heart.
Fortunately, Lalo and Carolina share a common enemy. They can wipe out this evil. Together. If his fangs and her fists can stay focused, they might just triumph and discover what it feels like to take a bite out of love.
A spellbinding romantic fantasy about a powerful witch who will do anything to escape the remote island she’s being held captive on, including blackmail a notorious, charming pirate who washes up on shore.
ROSALINDA is trapped on Sinner’s Isle, an island filled with Majestics like her—beautiful witches loathed by society for their dangerous magic yet revered by powerful men who want to exploit them.
Now eighteen, Rosa will be the prize commodity at this year’s Offering, a fiesta for the wealthy to engage in drink, damsels, and debauchery. That is why she decides to flee—before someone forces the vicious phantoms within her to destroy everything she touches.
Handsome, swashbuckling MARIANO has long sailed the high seas as the Prince of Pirates. After the king’s fleet attacks his father’s infamous ship, Mariano is marooned on Sinner’s Isle with only an enchanted chain meant to lead him to his heart’s desire. Instead, he finds a brazen—but bewitching—headache: Rosa.
Mariano and Rosa must now outwit each other and their enemies before the Offering is over and it’s too late to escape the perils of Sinner’s Isle.
