11 Struggles All Readers Can Relate To

There are quite a few struggles all readers can relate to. Though they might not seem like that big of a deal to people outside of the reading community, to lovers of young adult fiction novels, these are serious struggles that have plagued us for years. We’ve put together a list of some of the most pressing ones below. Have a look!

1. Waiting for a sequel.

We’ve all been there: you’ve just finished a book, one with an incredible plot that reminded you why you first fell in love with stories and reading, and you need the sequel. Like, right now. So you get online, click around a bit . . .

2. Binge-Reading

Yeah, so what if it’s 3 a.m. and you’ve been reading since the previous morning?! Reading is serious business! Just one more chapter!

3. Spending All Your Money on Books

You’ve got one hundred bucks? That’s one hundred more bucks to spend on YA books! To the bookstore we go!

4. Getting Too Invested in Characters

This is both a blessing and a curse. While we enjoy reading about our favorite characters and their shenanigans, sometimes we might get a little too invested. But hey, getting invested is just part of the fun of being a reader!

5. Accidentally Losing Your Place in the Story

This is the worst. You know the struggle: you’re in the middle of a gripping scene, things are happening, and the main character is about to make a decision that will change everything . . . and the book slips from your hand and you lose the page you were on. Now you have to frantically try to get back to it without accidentally stopping at a further page with spoilers. Argh!

6. Reading Too Many Books at the Same Time

Sure, you’re having a blast with the book you’re currently reading, but a new one is calling to you like honey to a fly. You give in, and before you know it you have a list of ten or more books you’re working on at once!

7. Avoiding Spoilers

“Oh, you’re reading that book? Well, did you get up with the part with—”

“Lalalalalala stop talking lalalala!” *Fingers in ears.*

Every. Time.

8. Figuring Out Which Books to Keep on Your Bookshelf

The bookshelf is an esteemed location reserved only for a reader’s favorite of favorites YA novels. But how do you figure out which ones are getting those spots, especially when you have more books than you have space? The internal arguments can go on forever!

9. When People Say They Liked the Movie but Never Read the Book

“So you liked that new movie? What did you think of the book it’s based on?”

“Oh, I haven’t read it.”

“Excuse you?”

10. Lending Someone a Book and Never Getting It Back or Getting It Back Damaged

There is no greater disappointment in the world than lending out a book and either never getting it back or getting it back damaged. Friendships are put to the test when such atrocities are committed.

11. Grieving Characters’ Deaths

They might not be real people, but they’re real to us, darn it! And when they die, we need to grieve them.
